It is relatively easy to complain about the downsides of advertising. Advertisements can be really irritating, they waste our time, make searching for useful information harder, they are misleading in so many ways... The list can go on and on. However, there is much more to advertising than it might seem. I would like to give you a few reasons, why advertising plays an important role in a modern society and why a ban on advertising would probably be a bad idea.
Let me explain this using the example of the Internet. Not many of us remember, how the Internet looked like when it all started. It was a very limited in size cluster of connected computers, first used by the military, later for academic purposes. Why did it change? Why did the Internet become wildly available for the masses? Yes, you guessed it - it was because of advertising. Internet started growing rapidly, when a friendly user interface was introduced. Why was it introduced? For the simple reason, that the advertisers needed it to reach more people.
Where does all the free stuff on the Internet come from? Who and why is paying for the servers and putting so much effort in order for you to get your e-mail, search sites, use online encyclopaedias, dictionaries, or even upload photos of your family? Its all because of advertising. The whole idea is to give you all of these useful things in exchange for looking at some banner-ads or context-oriented advertisements from time to time.
Internet is just an example - a useful one, because everything happens so fast and is so obvious there. However, advertisements work on the same basis in many different areas as well. We might not want to admit it but let us face it - it would be hard without them.
